Adaptive manufacturing
Also known as: Adaptive production
German: Adaptive Fertigung
In manufacturing, adaptive manufacturing is an approach in which production processes, parameters or sequences adjust automatically or semi-automatically to changing conditions, such as material variation, tool wear, demand or product variants, based on measured data.

In one sentence
Adaptive manufacturing adjusts processes, parameters or sequences to changing conditions such as material variation or demand, based on data.
Example
An adaptive grinding process measures each part in process and adjusts the infeed so every shaft reaches its target diameter despite varying stock.
How it applies
- Engineering: Adaptivity ranges from Closed-loop control of process parameters to dynamic rescheduling and reconfiguration of lines. It requires reliable sensors, data models and clear limits within which the system may adapt.
- Quality: Adaptive processes must be validated for their whole adjustment range, not just one setpoint. In regulated industries, the permitted range is part of the validated process.
- AI: When machine learning models drive adaptation, their behavior can change with data; monitor for AI drift and keep a human decision for changes outside the validated range.
- Documentation: Describe what adapts, based on which inputs, within which limits, and how operators can see and override adaptations. 'The system optimizes itself' is not enough for an operating manual.
Adaptive vs. flexible manufacturing
Production flexibility is the capability to handle change. Adaptive manufacturing uses data to make those changes automatically during operation.
