Edge orchestration
Also known as: edge application management, edge workload orchestration
German: Edge-Orchestrierung
In industrial IT, edge orchestration is the centralized deployment, configuration, updating and monitoring of applications and containers running on distributed edge devices, often using container orchestration technology adapted to plant conditions.
- System integration
In one sentence
Edge orchestration deploys, updates and monitors applications on many distributed edge devices from a central management system.
Example
The central edge management system rolls out a new version of the vibration analysis container to 40 edge devices, one line at a time, and rolls back when health checks fail.
How it applies
- Operation: Orchestration makes edge applications manageable at scale. Staged rollouts, health checks and rollback reduce the risk that one update stops many lines at once.
- Change management: Deploying software to devices connected to production is a change to the plant. It should follow the site's Change control and maintenance windows; automatic updates must not interfere with running production or safety functions.
- Documentation: Keep a record of which application versions run on which device, and document how local operation continues when the central orchestrator is unreachable.
Edge orchestration vs. data orchestration
Edge orchestration manages where and which software runs. Data orchestration manages how data flows and is processed through pipelines. An edge platform often needs both.
