Function block mapping
Also known as: FB mapping
German: Funktionsbausteinzuordnung
In IEC 61499, function block mapping is the assignment of an individual function block instance of an application to a specific resource of a device, where it will be created and executed.

In one sentence
In IEC 61499, function block mapping assigns one function block instance of an application to the resource that will execute it.
Example
The instance JamDetect is mapped to the resource of the conveyor controller, while the instance SortDecision is mapped to the edge device.
How it applies
- Engineering: Each function block instance of an application is mapped to one resource. When connected instances end up on different devices, the connection has to be implemented through communication function blocks, which some tools generate automatically.
- Performance: Mapping decides load distribution and communication volume. Blocks that exchange events at high frequency usually belong on the same resource.
- Deployment: After mapping, the tool creates the instances on the target resources, typically with Management command messages, and connects them.
- Documentation: A mapping table (instance, device, resource) provides the Trace link between the functional application and the physical system. Service staff need it to know which device to check when a function fails.
Function block mapping vs. application mapping
Function block mapping concerns single instances. Application mapping is the result for the whole application.
