Intralogistics
Also known as: In-plant logistics, Internal logistics
German: Intralogistik
In logistics, intralogistics covers the organization, control and execution of material flows within a company's site, such as receiving, storage, picking, internal transport and shipping.
- Automation components
In one sentence
Intralogistics covers material flows within a site: receiving, storage, picking, internal transport and shipping.
Example
Automated guided vehicles carry pallets from the high-bay warehouse to the assembly lines, controlled by a warehouse management system.
How it applies
- Engineering: Intralogistics systems combine conveyors, automated storage, AGVs or mobile robots and identification technology, controlled by material flow and warehouse software.
- Safety: Moving vehicles and shared areas with people require safeguarding concepts, such as speed limits and protective fields.
- Documentation: Operating instructions should cover traffic zones, behavior around moving vehicles and fault recovery, for example removing a jammed load. Interface documents describe the handover between intralogistics and production systems.
- Operation: Material flow software tracks stock and transport orders in real time; manual interventions must be booked so the system stays consistent.
- Maintenance: Conveyors, lifts and vehicles need inspection plans that account for continuous operation across shifts.
Intralogistics vs. logistics
Logistics as a whole includes transport between sites, suppliers and customers. Intralogistics stops at the site boundary.
