ISO 10218-2
German: ISO 10218-2
ISO 10218-2 is the international standard that specifies safety requirements for industrial robot applications and robot cells, covering integration, safeguarding, collaborative applications, commissioning and information for use.
- Standards
In one sentence
ISO 10218-2 specifies safety requirements for integrating industrial robots into applications and cells, including collaborative applications.
Example
An integrator designs a palletizing cell with fences, an interlocked access door and a safety laser scanner zone, and documents the risk assessment according to ISO 10218-2.
How it applies
- Engineering: Part 2 addresses the integrator: layout, safeguarding, operating modes, manual intervention and collaborative applications. It relies on the robot's safety functions described under ISO 10218-1.
- Collaborative applications: The 2025 revision integrates much of the guidance on collaborative operation that was previously published in ISO/TS 15066; check which documents your project and customer refer to.
- Documentation: The integrator must provide information for use for the complete cell, not just forward the robot manual; the documentation team should combine component information into cell-level instructions.
- Validation: The integrator validates the cell's safety functions on site, including stopping behavior and safeguard positions, and records the results.
ISO 10218-2 vs. ISO 10218-1
See ISO 10218-1. A compliant robot does not make a compliant cell; the application needs its own risk assessment.
