OPC UA over TSN

Also known as: OPC UA TSN, OPC UA via TSN

German: OPC UA über TSN

In industrial communication, OPC UA over TSN is the combination of OPC UA PubSub with Time-Sensitive Networking, aiming at deterministic, vendor-independent real-time communication between controllers and field devices over standard Ethernet.

  • Standards

In one sentence

OPC UA over TSN combines OPC UA PubSub with Time-Sensitive Networking for deterministic, vendor-independent real-time Ethernet.

Example

Two controllers from different vendors exchange interlock signals every millisecond as OPC UA PubSub messages on a TSN network with reserved time slots.

How it applies

  • Engineering: TSN provides time synchronization, scheduled traffic and bandwidth reservation on standard Ethernet; OPC UA provides the information model and the PubSub message format. The OPC Foundation's Field Level Communications initiative (OPC UA FX) builds on this combination.
  • Maturity: Specifications, profiles and products are still evolving. Engineers check which parts are available in the products they plan to use and whether devices from different vendors have been tested together.
  • Commissioning: TSN networks need configured schedules and PTP-capable switches; standard switches don't provide the timing guarantees.
  • Documentation: The documentation team states precisely which OPC UA and TSN profiles a product supports and avoids implying determinism across networks that include non-TSN components.

OPC UA over TSN vs. established real-time Ethernet

PROFINET, EtherCAT and EtherNet/IP provide real-time communication today, each within its own ecosystem. OPC UA over TSN aims at a common, vendor-neutral solution; several of these ecosystems are also adopting TSN themselves.
