OT security specialist
Also known as: OT security engineer, ICS security specialist
German: OT-Security-Spezialist
An OT security specialist is a professional who plans, implements and maintains cybersecurity measures for industrial control systems, combining knowledge of automation technology, industrial networks and processes with information security methods such as risk assessment, segmentation and incident response.
- OT security
In one sentence
An OT security specialist secures industrial control systems, combining automation and process knowledge with information security methods.
Example
The OT security specialist reviews the integrator's zone and conduit drawing, checks the firewall rules against the documented data flows and joins the factory acceptance test.
How it applies
- Engineering: The specialist performs or reviews Security risk assessment, defines zones and target security levels, specifies security requirements for suppliers and checks their implementation.
- Operation: In operation, the role covers vulnerability triage, change reviews, monitoring alerts and incident response together with production and safety staff. Understanding what a stop or restart means for the process is essential.
- Organization: The role bridges IT security and automation teams. Clear Responsibility assignment prevents both sides from assuming the other covers OT. Training and certification programs based on IEC 62443 exist but are not a legal requirement in themselves.
- Documentation: Documentation teams can work with OT security specialists as reviewers of security manuals, hardening guides and release notes, to make sure security instructions are correct, complete and consistent with the product.
OT security specialist vs. functional safety engineer
The OT security specialist protects against compromise; the functional safety engineer ensures that safety functions achieve the required SIL or PL. Their analyses must be coordinated at the Safety-security interface.
