PROFIBUS integration

Also known as: PROFIBUS connection, PROFIBUS device integration

German: PROFIBUS-Integration

In automation engineering, PROFIBUS integration is the task of connecting devices or subsystems to a PROFIBUS network and controller, including importing GSD files, assigning station addresses, configuring modules and parameters, and mapping the data into the control program.

  • Industrial communication

In one sentence

PROFIBUS integration connects devices to a PROFIBUS network: GSD import, addressing, module configuration and data mapping.

Example

To integrate a third-party weighing terminal, the engineer imports its GSD file, sets station address 7 and maps the weight value to a PLC data block.

How it applies

  • Engineering: The device's GSD file defines the modules and parameters available. The engineer selects the modules that match the physical device and the data needed; a mismatch leads to a configuration error at startup.
  • Commissioning: Addresses, termination and diagnostics are checked; each station's diagnostic data should be evaluated in the program, not only the bus fault LED.
  • Migration: When PROFIBUS devices are integrated into a PROFINET system, a proxy maps the PROFIBUS segment. Timing and diagnostics of the proxied devices need separate testing.
  • Documentation: The documentation team records GSD file versions, station addresses, module configurations and the data mapping, and describes how to replace a device without losing the configuration.

Integration vs. protocol

PROFIBUS is the fieldbus. Integration is the engineering work to make a specific device work in a specific system, which also includes agreeing on data meanings in an Interface specification.
