Safe handling
In machine safety, safe handling means the methods for lifting, moving, transporting, storing or positioning machinery and materials without unacceptable risk.
- Machine safety
- Technical documentation
- Human factors
In one sentence
Safe handling covers how machines and materials are lifted, moved, stored and positioned without unacceptable risk to people.
Example
The transport chapter for a robot cell specifies forklift pickup points, maximum tilt, storage conditions, the robot’s transport position with locked axes and which bolts may only be removed after installation.
How it applies
- Machine safety: Transport, installation and storage are life cycle phases in the risk assessment. Hazards include tipping loads, crushing during positioning and ergonomic hazards from manual lifting of parts.
- Technical documentation: Instructions give mass, dimensions, center of gravity, lifting points, approved equipment, transport locks and storage conditions, with drawings rather than text alone.
- Integrated systems: Machines shipped in modules need handling instructions for each module and for the reassembly sequence.
- Evidence: Design reviews of transport configurations and packaging tests show that the stated methods were considered.
Safe handling vs. material handling equipment
Safe handling describes the method. Cranes, forklifts and slings are the equipment, each with its own rules and inspections.
