Safety edge
Also known as: pressure-sensitive edge, safety contact edge
German: Schaltleiste
In machine safety, a safety edge is a pressure-sensitive protective device, usually a profile along a moving part, that produces a stop signal when it is deformed by contact with a person or object. ISO 13856-2 covers pressure-sensitive edges and bars.
- Machine safety
In one sentence
A safety edge is a pressure-sensitive profile on a moving part that triggers a stop when it contacts a person or object.
Example
The closing edge of a power-operated sliding guard on a machining center carries a safety edge, so the door reverses when it hits an operator's hand.
How it applies
- Engineering: A safety edge only works if the hazardous movement stops within the deformation travel of the profile. Stopping distance, approach speed and actuating force must fit together.
- Signal processing: Edges are connected to a suitable control unit that monitors the circuit, for example by closed-circuit or resistance monitoring.
- Maintenance: Mechanical damage, hardening of the profile and cable wear degrade the function, so regular checks are part of the maintenance plan.
- Documentation: State the actuating force, travel and response time assumptions and the inspection interval. The documentation team should describe the check the operator performs and what to do if the edge is damaged.
Safety edge vs. pressure-sensitive mat
Both are pressure-sensitive protective devices. A safety edge is mounted on the moving part and detects contact at the closing edge. A Pressure-sensitive mat lies on the floor and detects a person standing in a hazardous zone.
