Task assignment
German: Aufgabenzuweisung
In automation and production control, task assignment is the concrete act of giving a specific task or job to a specific resource, such as a machine, robot, vehicle or person, for execution.
- System integration
In one sentence
Task assignment gives a specific task or job to a specific machine, robot, vehicle or person for execution.
Example
The fleet manager assigns transport job 1832 to AGV 4, which is closest to the pickup point and has enough battery charge.
How it applies
- Engineering: Assignment logic considers capability, availability, location, workload and priority. The receiving resource should confirm acceptance so the assigner knows the task is being handled.
- Fault handling: Define what happens when the assigned resource cannot complete the task: reassignment, escalation or operator intervention.
- Traceability: Record which resource executed which task; this is needed for quality investigations and performance analysis.
- Documentation: Explain in the operating documentation how operators can see, change or cancel assignments, and which role is allowed to do so.
Task assignment vs. responsibility assignment
Task assignment gives an operational job to a resource at runtime. Responsibility assignment determines, in an organization or project, who is accountable for a task, deliverable or decision. One is about execution, the other about accountability.
