Visualization
Also known as: Process visualization, HMI visualization
German: Visualisierung
In industrial automation, visualization is the graphical presentation of machine and process states, values and alarms on screens, together with the operating functions that let users interact with the process.
- HMI and SCADA
In one sentence
Visualization presents machine and process states, values and alarms graphically and provides the screens for operating them.
Example
The visualization of the bottling line shows each machine's status, the line speed and the current faults on an overview screen.
How it applies
- Engineering: Visualization projects follow a style guide: colors, symbols, fonts, navigation, alarm display. In German-speaking industry, "Visualisierung" often names the whole HMI or SCADA project.
- Operation: Good visualization directs attention to abnormal states and supports quick decisions; decorative 3D graphics usually don't.
- Documentation: Screens and manuals must use the same labels. Screenshots in documentation go out of date with every software release; plan reviews or use callouts that don't depend on pixel-exact images.
- Maintenance: Visualization projects change with every machine modification. Keep them under version control with the controller program so both stay consistent.
Visualization vs. HMI
The Human-machine interface (HMI) includes all means of interaction, including physical controls. Visualization refers to the screen-based part. In practice the terms overlap strongly.
