iiRDS InformationType: classifying content by document type, topic type and subject
Users rarely search for a file; they search for a kind of content: the operating instructions, a troubleshooting procedure, the technical data. iiRDS, the intelligent information Request and Delivery Standard, answers that need with iirds:InformationType, the class for the characteristics of content. Its four subclasses classify information units by document type, topic type, information subject and directory node type, each with standardized instances. One rule is mandatory: every iiRDS Document must have at least one document type. This guide explains how the branches differ, which properties link them, how they map to DITA information typing and why information types are the most useful intent filter for delivery portals and AI retrieval.

Definition
In iiRDS (intelligent information Request and Delivery Standard), InformationType is the abstract class for the characteristics of content; its subclasses iirds:DocumentType, iirds:TopicType, iirds:InformationSubject and iirds:DirectoryNodeType provide standardized values that classify information units and directory nodes by kind of deliverable, kind of topic, theme and kind of directory.
iirds:InformationType is not used directly. It sits directly under the root class iirds:iirdsDomainEntity, as a sibling of documentation and administrative metadata rather than a subclass of either, and is used through its four subclasses. Document types such as iirds:OperatingInstructions or iirds:PartsCatalog describe a deliverable. Topic types describe a single unit, through the classes Concept, Task, Reference, Troubleshooting, Learning and Form with instances such as iirds:GenericTask. Information subjects such as iirds:Safety or iirds:TechnicalData say what content is about. Directory node types such as iirds:TableOfContents type navigation structures.
The linking properties iirds:has-document-type, iirds:has-topic-type and iirds:has-subject are all subproperties of iirds:has-information-type. Directory nodes use iirds:has-directory-structure-type.
In one sentence
iiRDS InformationType is the classification branch of the vocabulary that tells a consumer whether content is, for example, operating instructions, a task, safety information or a table of contents.
Example
A machine builder publishes the documentation for a palletizer. The document "Operating instructions PAL-40" has the document type iirds:OperatingInstructions. Inside it, "Clearing a jammed layer" is a topic with the topic type iirds:GenericTroubleshooting, and "Emergency stop devices" carries the subject iirds:SafetyInstruction. The topic "Cleaning the gripper" has the topic type iirds:GenericTask and is applicable for both operating and maintenance instructions. In the customer portal, an operator filters by "troubleshooting" and finds the jam procedure immediately, without knowing which manual it appears in.
How it applies
Technical documentation
Information types turn editorial structure into metadata. Use the standardized document types wherever they fit, since consumers understand them without extra mapping, and add proprietary instances only for deliverables iiRDS does not cover. Assign topic types consistently from your authoring standard, and use subjects for cross-cutting themes such as safety, technical data or conformity.
Migration
PDF manuals usually yield one document type per file, while topic types must be assigned per section. DITA maps cleanly: task, concept, reference and troubleshooting topics correspond to the iiRDS topic types, and DITA hazard statements point toward the warning message subjects. Legacy CMS content types should be mapped once in a conversion table.
MedTech
Medical device documentation separates instructions for use, service manuals and technical descriptions. Document types make that separation explicit, and the subject iirds:Conformity marks declarations and applicable standards. Classifying a document as instructions does not establish that its content satisfies regulatory requirements for instructions for use.
AI and retrieval
Intent maps onto information type. "How do I" questions should be answered from task topics, "what is" questions from concepts, error messages from troubleshooting. Filtering on topic type and subject before semantic ranking improves precision, and filtering on iirds:Safety helps keep warnings next to the procedures they belong to.

In topic-based authoring and modular architectures
Topic-based authoring already relies on information typing: writers choose a task, concept or reference structure before they write. iiRDS carries that decision into delivery, so the type is not lost when content leaves the authoring system. In a modular architecture, the topic type stays with the unit while document types describe the assemblies it is reused in, and iirds:is-applicable-for-document-type records the intended contexts. Consumers can then build their own views, such as a troubleshooting hub or a safety overview, from the same information units without separate publications.
Concept cluster
How this concept connects to the other iiRDS core concepts.
- iiRDS metadataInformation types are the classification branch of iiRDS metadata, next to documentation and administrative metadata.
- iiRDS DocumentEvery iiRDS Document must have at least one document type.
- iiRDS TopicTopics carry topic types and may state the document types they are applicable for.
- iiRDS InformationUnithas-topic-type and has-subject are defined on information units, so any unit can carry them.
- iiRDS ExternalClassificationAn information type uses the iiRDS vocabulary; an external classification records a class from another system.
- Audience in iiRDSThe information type says what kind of content it is; the qualification says who it is for.

Frequently asked questions
- What is an information type in iiRDS?
- It is the class iirds:InformationType, the characteristics of content. It is used through its subclasses DocumentType, TopicType, InformationSubject and DirectoryNodeType.
- Is a document type mandatory in iiRDS?
- Yes. Every iirds:Document must have at least one relation to a standardized iiRDS document type through iirds:has-document-type. Proprietary document types may be added on top.
- What topic types does iiRDS define?
- iiRDS defines the topic type classes Concept, Task, Reference, Troubleshooting, Learning and Form, with generic instances such as iirds:GenericTask and iirds:GenericConcept.
- Is safety a topic type in iiRDS?
- No. Safety is an information subject, iirds:Safety, linked with iirds:has-subject. A safety instruction can be a task and have the subject Safety at the same time.
- Can a topic belong to several document types?
- A topic has no document type of its own, but it may state with iirds:is-applicable-for-document-type that it is intended for one or more document types, such as operating instructions and a quick guide.
- Should a document with mixed content get several document types?
- Yes. The specification recommends more than one document type for documents with mixed content, for example combined transport and assembly instructions.
Conclusion
iiRDS InformationType gives content a shared, standardized answer to the question what kind of content is this. Assign a document type to every document, a topic type to every topic, and subjects wherever the theme matters for filtering. Consumers and retrieval systems can then route questions to the right kind of content without reading it first.
