Asset Administration Shell (AAS)

Also known as: AAS, Administration shell

German: Verwaltungsschale (AAS)

In Industrie 4.0, the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) is the standardized digital representation of an asset, such as a device, machine or plant, made up of submodels that describe its properties, functions and documents in a machine-readable way. Its structure is defined by the AAS metamodel published by the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) and standardized in IEC 63278.

In one sentence

The Asset Administration Shell is the standardized Industrie 4.0 digital representation of an asset, built from machine-readable submodels.

Example

A drive manufacturer delivers each servo motor with an AAS containing the Digital Nameplate, Technical Data and Handover Documentation submodels.

How it applies

  • Engineering: Each AAS and each asset has a globally unique identifier. Content is grouped into Asset Administration Shell submodel (AAS submodel)s, and every element points to its meaning via a Semantic ID (AAS), typically an ECLASS or IEC 61360 concept.
  • Integration: An AAS can be exchanged as a file package (AASX), or served through a standardized API so that engineering tools, MES or maintenance systems can read the data.
  • Documentation: The Handover Documentation submodel carries manuals, certificates and data sheets with classification metadata. Documentation teams should provide documents with the metadata the submodel expects, much like an iiRDS Package.

AAS vs. digital twin

A Digital twin is a broad concept for a synchronized digital counterpart of a physical thing. The AAS is one specific, standardized implementation of the digital representation of an asset. An AAS may contain static type data only and still be a valid AAS; it becomes part of a live twin when it is connected to operational data.

The AAS is also discussed as a possible technical basis for the Digital product passport (DPP), but providing an AAS does not in itself fulfill any DPP obligation.
