Environmental conditions
Also known as: Ambient conditions, Operating conditions
German: Umgebungsbedingungen
In engineering, environmental conditions are the physical and chemical conditions to which equipment is exposed during storage, transport and operation, such as temperature, humidity, vibration, shock, dust, corrosive atmospheres and altitude. IEC 60721 classifies them.
- Automation components
- Standards
In one sentence
Environmental conditions are the temperature, humidity, vibration, dust and other influences equipment faces in storage, transport and use.
Example
The data sheet specifies an operating temperature of 0 to 55 °C and a relative humidity of 10 to 95 % without condensation.
How it applies
- Engineering: Components are selected and tested for the expected conditions; cabinets may need cooling, heating or filters to keep devices within their limits.
- Commissioning: Actual site conditions are checked against the design assumptions, including installation altitude and mounting position.
- Documentation: Technical data, installation instructions and the description of Intended use should state permitted environmental conditions for operation, storage and transport. Operating outside them may be reasonably foreseeable misuse and belongs in the risk assessment.
Environmental conditions vs. degree of protection
Environmental conditions describe the surroundings. The IP code (degree of protection) describes how well an enclosure resists solid objects and water. A high IP code does not cover temperature, chemicals or vibration.
