Irreversible action (AI agent)
Also known as: Irreversible action, One-way action
German: Nicht umkehrbare Aktion
An irreversible action is an action of an AI agent whose effect cannot be undone by the system itself — such as a sent message, a payment, a deletion without backup, a published text, a command executed on a physical process or a firmware update installed on devices in the field — so that only a compensating action or a repair can limit its consequences.

In one sentence
An irreversible action of an AI agent can’t be undone by the system — sent, paid, deleted, published, executed on a machine. Gate it in advance.
Example
An agent can undo a draft it saved, but not the e-mail it sent to 3,000 customers; the e-mail can only be followed by a correction.

- Restoring operations after an AI agent incidentWhat can be undone after an AI agent crossed its boundary, what can’t — and when may the agent and the systems it touched run again?UKDeutsch
- When an AI agent crosses the line: detect, contain and restore operationsWhat has to be in place when an AI agent does something it isn’t allowed to do — in IT systems, IoT fleets, OT and on machines — and how is it detected, stopped and released again?UKDeutsch
How it applies
- Classify actions before go-live: Reversible (draft, branch, staging), reversible with effort (database change with backup, configuration with versioning) and irreversible (send, pay, publish, physical command, fleet update). The class decides the approval gate.
- Rollback has limits: A rollback restores a system's state, not the world's. Customers who read a message, material that was cut and devices that rebooted stay as they are.
- Physical processes: In OT and on machines nearly every command is irreversible in this sense: a dosed amount, a cut, a moved axis. Agents there should propose, and people or the control system decide.
- After the fact: Irreversible actions are answered with a compensating action — a correction, a credit note, a recall — and are documented in the review.
Why it matters on your learning path
- Technical writers: Mark irreversible actions clearly in agent instructions and user interfaces.
- Technical marketers: Promise undo only where it exists.
- Technical project managers: Require a list of the agent's irreversible actions with their gates.
- Developers: Prefer drafts, staging and two-step commits for anything an agent does.
