Safety chapter

Also known as: safety section, safety instructions chapter

In safety documentation, a safety chapter is a documentation section focused on safety information, such as intended use, qualifications, general warnings, residual risks and protective equipment. It must not be the only location for task-specific safety controls.

  • Technical documentation
  • Standards

In one sentence

A safety chapter collects general safety information in a manual, but it must never be the only place for task-specific safety controls.

Example

The safety chapter of an injection molding machine manual explains intended use, operator qualifications, the guard system and residual risks, while the mold-change procedure repeats the relevant warnings at each step.

Explained in context

Context cards connect this term with others to answer one question. Also in British English and German.

How it applies

  • Technical documentation: Typical content: intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse, target groups and qualifications, explanation of signal words and symbols, overview of safety devices, residual risks, protective equipment and emergency behavior.
  • Task-specific safety: Warnings needed to perform a task safely belong in that task, placed before the step where the hazard arises; see warning message. Readers who jump to a procedure will not read the safety chapter first.
  • Reuse: Maintain safety content once and reuse it in the chapter and in tasks, for example with DITA hazard statements.
  • AI and retrieval: Answers generated from a single procedure must include its safety steps; content that only lives in the safety chapter tends to be lost in retrieval.

Safety chapter vs. embedded safety information

The safety chapter gives context and general rules. Embedded safety information gives the specific action at the moment it is needed. Both are needed, and a manual that relies only on the chapter shifts the burden of connecting general rules to specific tasks onto the user; see operating manual.
