In one sentence
A workplace safety instruction is an employer's instruction limited to safety: hazards, protective measures, PPE, emergency behavior and first aid.
Example
A warehouse posts a safety instruction at the battery charging station: hydrogen and acid hazards, no open flames, face shield and gloves when topping up, eyewash location and the emergency number.
How it applies
- Content: Hazards, protective measures, personal protective equipment, behavior in emergencies — linked to the site's emergency procedure — and first aid.
- German law: § 12 ArbSchG obliges the employer to instruct employees on safety and health with instructions and explanations aimed specifically at their workplace or area of work. Where a written instruction is required — for work equipment, hazardous substances or biological agents — it is the Betriebsanweisung, whose content the ordinances and DGUV rules describe; a safety instruction in Germany is therefore typically written as a Betriebsanweisung.
- Other jurisdictions: Other countries frame comparable employer duties differently; this entry does not claim a specific document duty outside Germany.
Workplace safety instruction vs. safety instructions in the manual
The manufacturer's instructions for use contain safety instructions about the product: residual risks, warnings, safe use. The workplace safety instruction is the employer's document about the workplace where the product is used. The first is an input for the second.
