iiRDS ProductLifeCyclePhase: linking content to the phases of a product's life
Most documentation is organized around what happens to a product over time: it is installed, operated, maintained, repaired and finally disposed of. iiRDS, the intelligent information Request and Delivery Standard, captures this with iirds:ProductLifeCyclePhase, a class of product metadata with four standard phase classes and a set of standardized values such as iirds:Installation, iirds:Operation and iirds:Maintenance. Unlike product variants or components, lifecycle phases do not have to be invented by each manufacturer. This guide explains the phase structure in iiRDS 1.3, how the Machinery and Software domains add values, how to link a topic to a phase in RDF, and why the product lifecycle phase must be kept apart from iirds:ContentLifeCycleStatus, which describes the state of the content, not of the product.

Definition
In iiRDS (intelligent information Request and Delivery Standard), a ProductLifeCyclePhase is a defined period in the evolution of a product from the conceptual idea to its ultimate disposal. It is product metadata, organized in the classes DesignAndRealization, PuttingToUse, Use and AfterUse, whose standardized instances are linked to information units with iirds:relates-to-product-lifecycle-phase.
iirds:ProductLifeCyclePhase is a subclass of product metadata. It is not used directly. Its four subclasses divide the product's life: DesignAndRealization (from ideation through production), PuttingToUse (setting the product up for its intended use), Use (the product realizes its function) and AfterUse (after active use).
The actual values are instances of these classes. The iiRDS core defines, among others, Installation and Configuration under PuttingToUse; Operation, Maintenance, Repair, Diagnostics, Fault, EmergencyOperation and Decommissioning under Use; and Disposal under AfterUse. The domain extensions add more, for example Transport, Assembly and Commissioning for machinery, or Deployment and Update for software.
An information unit points to one or more phases with iirds:relates-to-product-lifecycle-phase, meaning its content describes activities or knowledge related to that phase. Phases are standardized, so no proprietary extension is needed for the common cases.
In one sentence
A product lifecycle phase in iiRDS says at which stage of the product's life, such as installation, operation or disposal, the content is needed.
Example
A manufacturer of industrial compressors publishes one iiRDS package per model. The topic "Anchoring the compressor to the floor" relates to iirds:Installation, "Starting the compressor" to iirds:Operation, "Replacing the air filter" to iirds:Maintenance, and "Draining oil before scrapping" to iirds:Disposal. A customer's service portal groups the content by phase: the installer sees the setup topics first, the operator the daily tasks, and the maintenance planner the service tasks. The same topics also carry the content status iirds:Released, which is a separate statement about the content, not the compressor.
How it applies
Technical documentation
Manuals are traditionally structured by phase: transport, installation, operation, maintenance, disposal. Linking each topic to a lifecycle phase makes that structure explicit in the metadata, so it survives when topics are reused outside the manual's chapter order. Tag the phase the content serves, not every phase it mentions.
Migration
In PDF manuals, the phase is implied by the chapter; converting chapters to topics is the moment to record it. From DITA, a subject scheme map with phase values or chapter-level classification can be mapped to the iiRDS instances. Earlier iiRDS versions already defined lifecycle phases; check custom values against the current core and domain lists before keeping them.
MedTech
For medical devices, phases such as installation, operation, maintenance and disposal each carry their own instructions and safety information. Phase metadata lets a portal show the reprocessing or maintenance content a technician needs without mixing in clinical operating steps. It organizes content; it does not establish that the documentation meets any regulatory requirement.
AI and retrieval
A question like "how do I replace the filter?" belongs to maintenance, not operation. Filtering retrieval by lifecycle phase, together with product variant, narrows the candidate passages and reduces answers that mix setup steps with service steps.

A maintenance topic can be in review: the phase says what it is about, the ContentLifeCycleStatus says whether it may be delivered.
In RDF
A topic linked to a core phase and to a Machinery domain phase. Shown in Turtle for readability; inside a package, metadata.rdf is written in RDF/XML.

In topic-based authoring and modular architectures
In topic-based authoring, the lifecycle phase is a property of the topic, not of its position in a map or manual. A troubleshooting topic can then appear in both an operator guide and a service manual while keeping one phase statement. In modular delivery architectures, phases act as a shared navigation axis: every consumer, from a service portal to an AI assistant, can offer "by phase" views over content from several suppliers, because the standard values have the same IRIs everywhere. Combine phase with audience and product variant for precise targeting.
Concept cluster
How this concept connects to the other iiRDS core concepts.
- iiRDS metadataLifecycle phase is one of the four kinds of iiRDS product metadata.
- iiRDS TopicTopics are the usual carriers of a lifecycle phase, for example a maintenance task.
- iiRDS InformationUnitiirds:relates-to-product-lifecycle-phase has iirds:InformationUnit as its domain.
- Audience in iiRDSPhase and qualification are often combined to target content, such as maintenance for service technicians.
- iiRDS InformationTypeThe topic type says what kind of content it is; the lifecycle phase says when in the product's life it is needed.
- iiRDS ConsumerConsumers filter and navigate content by lifecycle phase.

Frequently asked questions
- What are the product lifecycle phases in iiRDS?
- iiRDS divides the product's life into four phase classes: DesignAndRealization, PuttingToUse, Use and AfterUse. Standardized values such as Installation, Operation, Maintenance, Repair and Disposal are instances of these classes.
- Which property links a topic to a lifecycle phase?
- The property iirds:relates-to-product-lifecycle-phase links an information unit to a lifecycle phase. A unit may relate to several phases.
- What is the difference between ProductLifeCyclePhase and ContentLifeCycleStatus?
- ProductLifeCyclePhase says when in the product's life the content is needed, such as maintenance. ContentLifeCycleStatus says where the content itself stands in its editorial process, such as in review or released.
- Do I have to define lifecycle phases myself in iiRDS?
- Usually not. Unlike product variants and components, lifecycle phases are standardized in the iiRDS core and the domain extensions, and custom values are only needed for phases they do not cover.
- Is commissioning a standard iiRDS lifecycle phase?
- Commissioning is defined in the iiRDS Machinery domain extension, not in the core schema. The core offers Installation and Configuration for putting a product to use.
- Can I use the class iirds:Use directly on a topic?
- No. The phase classes are not intended to be used directly. Link the topic to an instance such as iirds:Operation or, if nothing fits, iirds:GenericUse or a custom value.
Conclusion
iirds:ProductLifeCyclePhase gives every topic a place in the product's life with a vocabulary that is shared across manufacturers. Use the standard core and domain values first, add custom ones only where they fall short, and never mix the product's phase with the content's own lifecycle status. The two answer different questions and both belong in a well-described package.
