AI companion

Also known as: Companion chatbot, AI companion service, Anthropomorphic interactive service

An AI companion is an AI application designed for ongoing personal, social or emotional interaction with a user — as a friend, partner, confidant or source of emotional support — as distinct from an assistant built to complete tasks.

In one sentence

AI companions are AI apps for ongoing personal and emotional interaction. What sets them apart from assistants and how regulators respond.

Example

A companion app keeps a persona with a name, remembers earlier conversations and asks the user how their day went. A support chatbot answers questions about a product and ends the conversation when the question is solved.

Explained in context

Context cards connect this term with others to answer one question. Also in British English and German.

Why it matters on your learning path

  • Technical writers: Users' attachment and their trust in what a companion says are part of the use situation. Information for users has to say plainly what the system is and what it is not, for example that it does not replace professional help.
  • Technical marketers: Promising friendship, love or understanding is a claim about the product. Regulators look at exactly this wording, especially where children may use the product.
  • Technical project managers: Plan for age assurance, crisis handling and limits on excessive use as requirements, and check which rules apply in each market.

How it differs from an assistant

A task assistant is judged by whether the task is done. A companion is designed for the relationship itself: persistent persona, memory of personal details, emotional language and availability at any time. These features invite anthropomorphism and make affirming answers (sycophancy) more consequential.

How regulators respond (as of October 11, 2026)

  • China: On July 15, 2026 rules on AI anthropomorphic interactive services were issued, with requirements on detecting user distress, crisis intervention and limits on excessive use.
  • Ireland: The Artificial Intelligence Companion Services (Protection of Children) Bill 2026, a private member's bill on companion services for persons under 16, was introduced on September 29, 2026. It is a bill, not law.
  • EU: The European Parliamentary Research Service published on the spread of AI companions and the challenges they generate (May 26, 2026). Under the AI Act, the transparency obligations require that people are informed when they interact with an AI system, unless this is obvious.
  • International: UNICEF's policy brief of June 9, 2026 examines child-rights risks of AI companions and the regulatory responses.
